The following article helps beginners use Flash. It is a lesson, which gives detailed instructions with the help of an example on how to use mask an image. It tells you how to create layers and use them to hide or mask objects. It also helps you to make an animation like a movie so that you get to see the end result.

It helps you learn in a stepwise manner. An ideal tutorial on Flash, which makes learning easy with lucid instructions. Also for questions or more reference material, the email id and the website are given.

Hello today I am going to give a brief introduction to layer masks. Layer masks kind of provide a window to a layer, you can set animation and change the layer mask to the impression of animation to the layer behind it. If you have any questions or comments please free to email at freeadobeflashtutorials@gmail.com.

For information on this and other tutorials, links to some other great flash tutorials, websites, and articles check out www.freeadobeflashtutorials.com. Ok, first of all we need to have something layer behind it. So I am going to import a picture. I will just import it. Put it just on a stage, use a logo right now. So we have something to move on it, to kind of create a window to see only a part of that or a section of that. Really easy way to do that is the masks.

So we are going to create a new layer, this will be our mask. And we want to create an object whatever, a window that want to be, only go with a circle. If you right click on the new layer and create, right click and select mask, that object now is no longer the object it just becomes kind of like a viewing window. Whenever you move that viewing window or change that viewing window, you will be able to see the object behind it. If we unlock the layer, we will be able to see it.

Show you how that animation kind of works. First of all, let us expand the picture 50 frames then let’s play with this layer mask a little bit. Let us make some key frames. I am just pressing Alt, holding it down, not letting it go, that’s a quick way to cut and paste. Let us go to each key frame and manipulate the mask. Now we go back and add motion tweens to these mask layers to move our mask around. If we test the movie, press Alt or Ctrl + Alt. You could see that viewing window moving, the layers. So you don’t actually have to change or manipulate or you could manipulate the layer behind it to change a mask.

So, if you have any questions or comments on this then you have freedom to post at freeadobeflashtutorials@gmail.com. To check out this and other tutorials, links, check out links to other articles about flash; make sure you check out my website at www.freeadobeflashtutorials.com.

And you will see it borrows the color from the body and applies it directly to that fin. Now we are gonna do the same thing with the bottom fin.

So go ahead and grab your selection tool again. Click once to select the bottom fin. And go ahead and grab your eye dropper tool again from the bottom of the toolbar. And now you can click on either the fish body or the top fin once. And that’s gonna sample the colors we want and apply it directly to that bottom fin. To apply an outliner stroke color to an object, first we are gonna need to select it. Go ahead and select the top fin by clicking it once with the selection tool.

And from the bottom of our toolbar go ahead and locate the stroke swatch, which has the pencil icon above it. And click to open up the swatches palette. Now let’s go ahead and choose a dark orange color from the right side of the palette. If you would like to follow this example, select the one marked FF6600. You will notice that every color in the flash swatches palette has a six-digit code. And this is gonna apply the stroke color directly to that fin. Go ahead and select the bottom fin with the selection arrow.

Grab the eyedropper tool, which we used earlier to borrow the fill color from one object to another and click on the outer edge of the original fin and you will see it borrows the stroke color from that fin and applies it to the bottom one.

And this is gonna paste a copy of the fin in the center of the stage. Go ahead and click and drag it in place at the bottom of the fish.

Now you will notice that the fin is going in the wrong direction and it is also a little bit too big, so what are gonna need to do is we are gonna need to use the Transform tool to flip this around and bring it down in size just a little bit. The free transform tool is found on top of the Flash toolbar. Go ahead and click that. And you will see that the selected object appears with eight handles. Each one of these handles allows us to resize, rotate or distort the object. So what we wanna do is resize this to about half of its original size.

So to resize both the height and the width at the same time, click and drag the top right corner handle and just bring the size down a little bit. Now we are also gonna do, is flip this fin around so what we can do is grab the bottom handle, click and drag upwards, until we flip the fin on top of itself and get it pointing in the right direction. To move it into place grab the selection tool again at the top of the toolbar and just click and drag it into place at the bottom of the fish’s body.

Now to apply some better colors to our fish we can use one of two places: the Flash toolbar or the Property Inspector. To apply color to an object first we need to select it. So while the selection tool is still active, click on the fish body till you se the fill pattern appear. And from the Property Inspector go down and locate the fill colors, which is next to the paint bucket. And click to open up the color palette. Now what we are gonna do is select the yellow and orange gradient which is a blend between two different colors at the bottom of the color palette.

And when we do that it is gonna apply directly to the fish’s body. Now we wanna do the same thing to both fins. But rather than following the same method, we can use the eye dropper tool to borrow color from the body. First we are gonna need to select the object we wanna color. So go ahead and click the top fin. And now you are gonna locate the eye dropper tool towards the bottom of the toolbar. Go ahead and select that. The eye dropper tool lets a sample color from one object to other. So in this case we want our fin to use the same color as the body.

When you open the file you will notice that there is an incomplete illustration of a fish which you are gonna need to complete using the drawing, selection and transformation tools found on the Flash toolbar. First things first, let’s drag that top fin into place. To select or move anything on the Flash stage we are gonna use the selection tool found at the very top of the toolbar. That’s the black arrow right there. Go ahead and select that. To select any object click on it once on the stage and click and drag to pull the object into place until it meets the fish body. So now we have got our fin in place.

What we are also gonna do, is we are gonna add a second fin at the bottom of the fish body. Now rather than redraw a new fin we can simply copy and paste the original one. But we are gonna need to use the transform tools to get it going in the right direction and the right size.

It is a lesson, which gives detailed instructions with the help of an example on how to use Flash. It tells you how to select, move, copy, re-size objects, and color them. It also tells you how to use the various shortcuts in Flash, which are handy for the rookie.

Again, it elaborates on various different tools that can be used for the same purpose i.e. the different ways in which the same thing could be done. An ideal tutorial on Flash, which makes learning easy with lucid instructions.

Click continue. And now we see the encoding step. You could not see the step if you would have been selected FLV on the first screen. Now see the codec remain unchanged in FLV, its unchanged in flash 9, this encoding screen has an enhancements. The default tab review is the profiles tab and we can still select from the list of presetting coding templates provided from adobe. As we see, there are options for flash 7 and for flash 8. There are no options for flash 9, again because, the format of video remains unchanged.

If we click on the video tab, we can now customize the video settings used in our coding process. You should understand that under video codec, on to VP 6, new flash 8, and sort of in spotting flash 7. Move on this screen is the fact that now we can de-centralize the source video in adobe flash encoder. This is very useful; of course, your source video is interlaced.

We will leave rest of the settings on this panel unchanged, and we will review them in more details in late video.

We will select create new flash file action script 3 from the start page.

If you do not see this start page, you can click file – new. Before we do anything else, we will save the document. We will select file – save – and I will save this in my chapter 3 folder, and call it, videoplayer.fla. Hit enter. And now we will begin by importing a video. We initiate this process exactly as we would have been in flash 8, by selecting file – import – import video. And now we see the first screen of the video import wizard. Its identical to the first screen, in the same wizard in flash 8. Its prompting us the find where the video file is. I will click choose and navigate to via from video library, to Kennedy.avi.

I will select open to select that file. I could also have selected an already encoded FLV. I click continue. Now Flash is asking us how we plant to deliver this video. This screen is also largely unchanged from version 8. Since we are not delivering our video from a flash media server or flash video streaming service.

In case you didn’t see the video in part 1 of this series… here it is again
