Hi I am Greg and I am Billy, we are the Fuji guys, Fuji guys and this little quick photo tip video is on flash photography. And Billy can be here something may be watching snow as well but we do a lot of environment photography especially in winter because it’s so cold here. So, you know knowing some tricks about using your flash and really coming handy and also really this can make you get lot better pictures overall. So, let’s first talk about the equipments on most compact digital cameras, what are some of the tips and tricks and settings about the flash that in most cases built right into the camera.
Well, first step you know I mean when you first buy that camera, the cameras flash distance is gonna be most likely be set to the automatic flash mode. Which means, when the light goes down it automatically knows that it automatically fires the flash, okay.

Now the often situations however that the camera may not fire the flash and we can explain how you can able you know the flash goes up anyway. Okay, so now I got my automatic camera I turned it on right out of the box, when I need a flash it probably go up and when I don’t need a flash it probably is not gonna go up.

So, what are the situations when that a gonna flow that camera that’s gonna make it either the flash not gonna go up when I really need it or ahhhh or conversely go up when I don’t wanted to. One of the biggest situations to find this cop is backlink. So, basically when you are standing in front of anything where there is certain beach and the Sun is behind your back. What’s gonna happen is the camera when you aim it up to the subject it’s not gonna know that the subject is even there. And, it might not even know the subject’s face is in a shadow. And so, because it fade right because of the Sun and the camera is set to automatic mode the flash is gonna say well hey I have enough light, I don’t need the flash.

Right, and the same, in the same example kind of it happens with lot of people they might be in there living room or something, living room has got a nice big window. And, nice light coming to that window and the subject standing in front, that’s right when they point the camera at that window, the window flows that camera because of all that light coming in the window. They take the picture, the flash doesn’t go off and they didn’t even realize that flash didn’t go off. And they keep wandering why all this so.

Now it’s a cool effect I mean it is what they are going for. Sometimes, but most times what people should be doing either in the back light outdoor situation or back light indoor situation is I guess use a different setting on the flash the filling flash or the flash setting.
Naturally, we get it on most of the cameras, with the lightening symbol. So, when you see the lightening symbol, it means that the flash is going to fire on all the time. On your command basically, on your command exactly. Other tips would be you know, make sure you know with the compact cameras now the size of this flash is not very, not very large. And so keep in mind, the range in which you are taking the flash photography picture. So, if your subject is closed enough and the cameras take, you know this cameras flash is really strong enough upto about ten feet.

Ya, anything further then that, the subjects further then that; the flash is not going to reach that subject and bounce back so that camera can capture that light. And, so your subject will end up being dark. Keep in mind that with flash photography keep the cam in range. Within its range and they all have there limits. Different cameras have different limits depending upon if you change the ISO of the camera that limits changes with the ISO changing.

Another thing that changes with as far as the flash distance is whether or not you are seeing the picture with a wide angle or on the telephoto setting. And that’s something that people when have their camera with the zoom lens, they always want to zoom in on that subject get the closest picture with the flash. But, they don’t realize that when the camera is on that telephoto setting it’s not letting in there as much light. So, it doesn’t have the capabilities of producing the real exposed picture as much as if we had the wide angle.

So I guess the tip would be there, rather then zooming in on your subject when you are taking a flash picture you might wanna get closer yourself with the camera and use the wider setting on the lens, you have a better chance about real exposed picture. That’s the great tip and off course sometimes, when we can’t get that there is other ways of going around that. On some cameras, you have to build the change the ISO sensitivity of the camera by pumping that higher, it actually helps to increase the flash effective range. So, you know your camera was good to ten feet pumping it from four hundred ISO to eight hundred ISO may give you couple of feet’s more. More in terms of brightness and getting that background to be better lit.

Okay, let’s talk a little bit about couple of things that happen with flash, one of the most common things that people feels rolls and pitches when they get that red eye. And, many of you know there and I, we all know that what happens when you go into a darker room, your pupils shrink the, Ahhh sorry they expand. And let more light in and then when the flash on a camera that has a build in flash that is so close to the lens it literally bounces up your eyes, lights up the blood vessels and when you get this picture you have got this red eyes. So, I know there are few ways you can kind of do restart and even eliminate it. Why don’t you go through and tell us and give us some tips on that.

Okay Greg, just right on the hardware itself in most cameras there’s actually a red eye reduction flash mode. So, basically what it does it fires multiple flashes so that it actually makes the pupils shrinks a little so that you reduce them out of camera capturing the blood vessels that’s being reacting to the light that gets in. I have being around the block a few times and that doesn’t work so good. I am gonna tell you, I mean I know they call the red eye reduction flash and sometimes there are couple of things. A doesn’t work so good and B it force people sometimes they think the picture have been taken already. So, is there any more advanced technology that is better then relying on those?

With some Fuji cams that we have, there’s actually a build in red eye remover feature that based on face detection technology. It determines faces in the scene, fires the flash normally and when it detects the subject, it then looks at the eyes and if it sees any redness in the eyes it automatically eliminates it. So, it does it on the spot with the push up button, no editing required on the computer and thing like that. And it’s just a great system because it is based on the face detection, its not going to take any other red things like a red beads or some of kind.

Okay, cool and then the last thing on the red eye I guess if your camera doesn’t reduce it, you can always do it on your computer. So, don’t think just your pictures completely ruined, just because the flash gave you a red eye. Ahhh it’s very very easy with more software programs to simply remove that red eye after the fact okay. Okay now, talk about just where the cameras positioned on the flash relative to where the lens is and what the role of thumb is for that. Okay, very quickly put the flash you know, if you are taking a vertical shot, you wanna shot and the flash is actually below the lens where you actually end up with sometimes is shadow happening onto the back of the, on the subject. So, to avoid that always try to keep the flash above the lens. So, when you taking a shot that’s one tip.
Another tip is off course the flash is most effective when your finger is off the flash, really! You know as much as we flow around about this tip, I am gonna tell that most people when they complain about there pictures being dark. Digital cameras in many cases are very compact cameras, and it is very common even for most experienced photographers to cover up a part or all that with their fingers.

So, keep your finger off that flash. Ahmm anyways I think we are gonna show you couple of quick pictures now, just to show you some of our kind of best practices when using flash. Let’s have a look at those right now Billy. Go and take a look at those sure.
Here is a typical example, of the bad day situation at the beach as you can see the camera is set to automatic flash mode and like always, the flash doesn’t fire because the scene is bright enough.

Ammm, you can see the subject under exposed, so I recommend you forcing the flash and again make sure you are within distance otherwise the subject will not would be probably exposed to the flash. Now make sure your fingers are not covered as well because you get low shadows on the subject by this example here. And just make sure that you orient the flash properly, if the flash is below like this diagram you see that you create shadows and again probably position with the flash you see that the shadows disappear.

And those are great, awesome. So hope you learned few tips on flash photography here and till next time I am Greg and I am Billy, we are the Fuji guys.

Today I am going to show you how to use some of the new cool flash Photoshop integration under the Adobe CS3 AutoCAD. Okay.. right now i have a Photoshop.

So lets go ahead and make a new document. We make the 200 by 200. So this go right here in this and I am going to draw some stuff on the stage so we can import them in the flash. So let’s grab the rectangle tool wrap that down. Draw rectangle on the stage then create a new layer. Select the circle tool and draw circle down on the stage. Remember to make a new layer. So now, we are going to save this document. Lets save it wherever as whatever okay there.

Now open the CS3 presentation. Now create a new flash file, try out this matter with an action script. Now use control R this is a hotkey or you can go in file import…import stage. Now browse through the files and the location of the saved Photoshop file. See now you can…previously you can couldn’t do this now you can. Select the different Photoshop layers.

In case you didn’t see the video in part 1 of this series… here it is again

And whole lot more, I mean, grated not everything you can do with flash, listed here in there help file. But everything you could possibly create, the fundamentals for all is right here. So don’t just read out the help file, its very useful. And it has all the coding examples. For pretty much everything, you can get one and learn it how to do. Like I said you type in sound, once you hit sound, or once you type in sound, and hit search. It gives you new slit here, and everything you click on you will see, that the sound is highlighted, the word sound is highlighted everywhere in the text, and is also, examples, everywhere in there.

Pausing and resuming a sound, you click on that and here is the code. You just copy and paste it in your frames, wherever they tell you to do there. Explains you how to create little applications. So, everything you need is right there and if you go through that whole set of lessons and… and… help in there, you will have a, you will be a flash CS3 Expert.

You can teach flash CS3 to other people, because you have the broad understanding, what’s really go on there. okay will see in next lesson.

Up in the top menu selections here, pull downs, last one in HELP.

And first selection is flash help or you can get to it by pressing F1 as a hot key. As you open that up, and if you are in action script 3 project then you can see you have a, I just searched sound little while ago. Umm but what you can do is, search what you are trying to do. What you trying to figure out? or what you think might be labeled as, in help file right there when you hit search. And then it lists everything, keyword fashion down, and pulls out all the pages up, would be relating to your search query. And pulls out all the stuff up.

I will give you the example and all the info they have in that. Umm… without even searching, within the pull down tree, you have pretty much everything you want learn how to do, is right here within the help file. We see lot of people going in to the forums, requesting code on how to make buttons, and how to work with sound.

That allows us to export action script during animations to the quick time format which we can then use inside a video for the Adobe after effects. So in my example here i have created a simple particle effect.

Now you can see i have some bubbles starting from the bottom of the screen and moving up towards the top. So this animation is entirely action script driven. So if we look at the structure of my movie i have single action layer, and a single frame. Now i am gonna come to the actions panel and i have some actions script 3 code that’s driving all of these animation. So in previous versions of flash we could export animations to the quick time format. But with only export time line in animations.

So if those animations had any type of action script or nested movie clip that animations wouldn’t show up in the final quick time file. So the export this in CS3 i am gonna go to the file menu go to export and choose export movie. So this brings up the save as dialog box.
