Table of contents for Flash CS3: The Drawing Tools

Flash CS3: The Drawing Tools

Flash CS3: The Drawing Tools Pt.2

Flash CS3: The Drawing Tools Pt.3

This allows us to toggle between standard or object drawing mode. For now, I want you to leave this unchecked. And let’s go over to the stage and click and drag in the center to draw a new rectangle.

Now from here go ahead and grab your selection tool to the top of the toolbar. And click once in the center of the shape and you will notice that just the fill becomes selected. From here you can click and drag and actually separate the fill from the stroke. To return it back to the center go ahead and choose Edit — Undo Move, that will bring us back to where you started. Now go ahead and double click the outer edge of the shape and this is gonna select the stroke by itself and leave the fill untouched. And similar to what you did with the fill you can click and drag and actually move the stroke and separate it from the fill.

Again choose Edit— Undo Move, to return it back. What you can also do with shapes drawn in this mode is you can tear them apart. We can do this by partially selecting the shape by drawing a marquee around the section that we want. Click and drag a marquee around half of the rectangle and you will see that only half of it becomes selected. And from this point I can click and drag on the selected area to separate it from the rest of the rectangle. So this is pretty cool because in this mode Flash lets us tear apart objects like clay, which gives us a lot of illustration flexibility.

Now to explore object-drawing mode, again let’s select the rectangle tool from the toolbar. This time at the very bottom of the toolbar, let’s click that object-drawing icon and select it and activate object-drawing mode for this tool. Now click, drag, draw a new rectangle at the top of the stage above the old one, go to the top of the toolbar, and grab your selection tool. If you click once on the center of the shape you will know the entire shape becomes selected. If we click once on the outer edge of the shape, again the entire shape is selected.

Shapes drawn and object drawing mode group the stroke and the fill together so they cannot be separated. Let’s go ahead and try and select part of this new shape. Click and drag and draw a marquee around half of the shape and you will see the same thing, the entire shape becomes selected. So, shapes drawn and object drawing mode are actually grouped together as one single object, they can’t be torn apart. In order to take a shape that has been drawn in this mode and break it apart so that we can separate the stroke from the fill or do partial selections again, we are gonna have to select it and break it out of the drawing object by choosing Modify– Break Apart.

Go ahead and select the rectangle choose Modify– Break apart and you will see this command breaks the shape out of the drawing object and back down to its raw form. Once again, we can select either the fill or the stroke or a portion of the shape to tear it apart again.

Let’s explore the differences between these two and how it affects you when you are drawing on the flash stage. First let’s pick a shape to draw with. So we are gonna click on the rectangle tool in the middle of our tool bar. And before you draw on the stage let’s first select a fill and a stroke color to work with. So at the bottom of the tool bar click on the stroke color icon which is right underneath the pencil.

That’s gonna launch your palette. Go ahead and choose a color. I am gonna choose a dark orange. And right below you click on the fill color. And when the image has appeared go ahead and choose a fill color for your new shape. I ‘m gonna choose a dark red. Now before we get started take a look at the very bottom of the toolbar, and you know there are two option buttons there. And the top one looks like a circle inside a square.

Very nice tutorial. It has shown how objects are selected, how they can be colored using strokes and fill colors and torn apart in both the modes. An ideal tutorial on Flash, which makes learning easy with lucid instructions.

In this clip I’m going to be talking about importing graphic layers into Flash. What you want to do is you want to go into ‘File’ – ‘Import’ – ‘Import to Stage’.

I’m going to choose our Photoshop File at Import. Okay as you can see we have our Background here and here is our ‘Background Art’ that we have in Photoshop. Now what you selected, you have different options up here – -uh- we’re gonna bring it in as a ‘Flattened bitmap image’. Now you can choose your ‘Compressions’ settings if you like – Lossy or Lossless. And it’ll also calculate the bitmap’s size for you. And down here we’re gonna choose – ‘Convert layers to: Flash Layers’, not Keyframes. We’ll hit ‘OK’ and it will bring in our graphic. Now this graphic you can do whatever you like with it you could convert it to a symbol or you could just leave it as is.

Now if you go to your ‘Library’ you’ll see that it brought in and still has it in a group. There’s your graphic. And up in your ‘Time line’ also has it as a group – Background and the Background Art layer.

In the next clip I’ll show you how to import graphic layers with styles, inside Flash.

In case you didn’t see the video in part 1 of this series… here it is again.

“I” will count vertical and J will count horizontal. We will keep track of the positioning of buttons with ‘pause X’ and ’pause Y. You will keep track of button size, actually button size won’t change, they always between 25 with width and height. I’m creating a wild loop now checking to make sure that ‘pause Y’, is lessens stage height, as is on this we going through loop, and in inner side we will make another loop, ‘pause X’, as on it sets less than stage width. And more, enter this loop, each one we wanna make sure the increment its counter. And every time we create a new row, we wanna make sure that the pause X is reset to zero. And J is reset to zero so that we can start from left side.

Pause Y will become the vertical row counter, times the buttons size. On the inner loop now I guess, we set pause X equals to J times the button size. And we have created a button, for B is a new button, we set B size both width and height to button size. Well move it to our Pause X, Pause Y, We will give it a label which is, our get random letter function, which was here before, and we added to the stage. Just move it. One of the advantage of creating buttons using the action script is we can change the button size. And say you wanna double the size, test it again.

And now we accommodate itself by building it just as the way we need it. Also we can change the properties. Again from properties panel we can change the size of a movie. Lest say that we wanna to make it 700X500 this time.

Test is again. And again, the buttons fit pretty well. Now if we doing this all by hand and dragging button this stage.

Even if you would wanna to make the small changes, that can be related yes. So this is gonna event that just you got from creating your buttons using action script.

My graphics are extending well beyond the stage and I can see that hiding my stage graphics and there I can see my white stage behind there.

I am just going to pull out a couple of bullet guides from the rulers and these will help me to see exactly where the crop of my stage is going to be for my final movie file and then we can set that close up. Ill go ahead and bring my layers back and there you can see within that green rectangle that’s where my dads character is going to show up. We can center his head up in there and maybe zoom it up a little bit more.

We want it a good close up. This is changing the spot light. Alright we’ll zoom back in and see if we can preview that. There we can see are green lines indicating the outside of the stage and that looks like we are seeing just enough of the dad character to give him a chance to introduce himself at the start of the animation.

Ok so ill center him up just a tiny bit more right inside there so we got some context for the room and we got are two scenes.

Are close up scene and are a little bit further away scene so we can see the full figure of the dad.

Now I’m going to set those two shots up right away. I’m going to give myself a little bit of space and time line window and I’m going to add something called the key frame that will allow me to make changes to the time line so we can create that close up scene and a full screen version of our dad for his exercises.

Ill just select the frames that I am interested in and insert my key frame right out of the time line menu. Since I got a couple of key frames now I can go back to the first one by dropping my play head in frame 1 and I can make changes to the original scene so we can zoom in on the dad face and give him his little close up.

Let me back off on the stage here just a little bit and select all those elements and ill just use a restyle tool over here to scale that up and by doing so well zoom in on the dad’s face.
